Rockey dongle not working with Studio 5 & AMD processor
« on: May 14, 2012, 02:07:03 pm »
The laptop that I was unable to get the dongle working on was an Acer Aspire 5560 AMD Dual Core Processor A4-3305M with Win 7 Pro 64 Bit. The dongle appears only once in the device manager and the Studio software wil not recognise it.

Hi Tim,

Unfortunately we have had this issue reported on several PC's and laptops in recent weeks. The only common denominator seems to be they are all running AMD CPU's and hence AMD motherboard chip sets.

As a result we have issued a consumer warning in the Recommended System Requirements section of our website which can be found here. It states that known license dongle incompatibilities have occurred on PC's containing AMD processors and are therefore not recommended at this time.

We are still looking into this issue and are planning a revision of the Medmont Licensing system for a not to distant release of Medmont Studio 5.

Hi Tim,

I have been able to identify a method for detecting the dongle on AMD based computers. This involves disassociating the AMD USB Filter Driver from the USB port. The AMD USB filter driver controls detection of the insertion and removal of devices and therefore has a system wide effect on how USB device connections are managed.  The full consequences of applying this change are unknown and should be applied at your discretion. I recommend making a system restore point before proceeding.

Although the fix will allow the dongle to be detected, it will require that the dongle be re-inserted after every reboot of the PC. I am still in discussion with the dongle supplier on this matter.

In order to disassociation the AMD USB Filter with the USB port, perform the following steps.

 1. Right-click (My) Computer and select Manage.
 2. In the left pane of the Computer Management window, select Device Manager.
 3. Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
 4. Locate the AMD USB Filter Driver.
 5. Right-click it and select Uninstall.
 6. Select Uninstall the driver software for the device.
 7. Restart your computer.

You can also use the ATI Catalyst Install Manager to uninstall AMD USB controller.

1.   Open Control Panel.
2.   Open Add/Remove Programs (XP) or Programs and Features (Vista/7).
3.   Double-click ATI Catalyst Install Manager or click Change.
4.   Select Uninstall Manager.
5.   Choose a Custom.
6.   Select the AMD USB controller as the component to uninstall.
7.   Reboot if prompted.

If all the above methods fail, you can also uninstall the AMD USB driver manually.

 1. Open the Windows registry, by clicking on Start > Run and typing regedit
 2. Navigate to the following location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}.
 3. In the right hand panel, if the UpperFilters entry exists, then delete it.
 4. Go to the location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\.
 5. Delete the usbfilter string.
 6. Delete this file: %system32%\drivers\usbfilter.sys.
 7. Reboot your computer.

Remember to re-insert the dongle once the computer reboots. This is still only a short term solution until we release the new Medmont Studio which removes the need for the dongle altogether.

Regards
David

A new version of Medmont Studio 5 has been release which removes the need for the rockey dongle.

If your not already running V5 then you will need to purchase an upgrade. Please contact your local Medmont distributor for upgrade pricing.

If you have already upgraded to version 5 then click here is read more about how to update.
